Coons to golf at San Diego State
The 17-year-old Wilbraham resident missed the cut at the Junior Worlds golf championship at La Jolla, Calif., last summer, a perceived misfortune that ultimately led to her making a commitment to play college golf next fall at San Diego State University. "I think everything happens for a reason, and things just worked out for me," the high school senior at Minnechaug Regional said. After missing that cut, Coons took a short drive to the SDSU campus. She went searching for the athletic department and found that the women's golf coach was in her office at the time. "I was just looking for a brochure ... I ended up meeting the coach and I loved the place the minute I stepped on the campus," Coons said. Coons said the coach Felicia Brown, a former LPGA and Futures tour player, assured her of a spot on the team.
