"It's not unusual necessarily to see that during a drought," said Mike Molligan, communications director for the Southwest Florida Water Management District, the agency that oversees water use. "There has been an increasing trend since things have gotten dry." From Sarasota to Citrus counties, golf courses overpumped anywhere from 2 percent to 55 percent more water than Swiftmud allows them. Some overpumped by more than 100,000 gallons a day. Several faced fines. Golf courses aren't the only ones suffering. Public utilities are also struggling to control drought-driven water use. Hernando County Utilities Department is under threat of fines as its customers gulp more than 2-million gallons a day over the utility's limit.

Golf Australia bans women golfers' calendar intended for charity

While the media and public - all over the world - can't get enough of the 13 women who bared nearly all for a calendar to raise funds for breast cancer research, a golf scholarship and some attention for the game, Golf Australia has banned it. With a 17-under-par 199 total, Airil Rizman took a three stroke lead over Englishman Simon Hurd, who is ranked 48th on the Asian Tour's UBS Order of Merit last year, dropped a spot to joint second place after a 69.

Golf: Wales Open's Mr 60 back on the birdie trail

PHILLIP ARCHER - who came so close to hitting the bullseye of a first-ever round of 59 on the European Tour at last year's Celtic Manor Wales Open - was back at his low-firing best yesterday. Archer shot 10 birdies in a nine-under 63 to open up a three-stroke lead after the opening round of the Abu Dhabi Championship. The Englishman, whose putt for the golfing holy grail of 59 from just seven feet slid past the lip of the last hole at Celtic Manor in June, sits clear at the top from a high-quality trio sharing second of Nick Dougherty, Retief Goosen and a lucky-to-be-alive Henrik Stenson, who was involved in a collision with a lorry while driving to the golf course. Several months on, his brush with 59 still gets Archer recognised wherever he goes. George Lopez is holding his own, so far. Firing off jokes that likely would have had even Hope guffawing, the actor named his ideal golfing partners."My dream foursome would be myself, Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell," Lopez said, alluding to a public feud between Trump and O'Donnell. "And she would count as two. So I wouldn't actually need four."He added with a sly grin, "I want to be in that fight."Asked about the state of his game, Lopez said he was thrown off by watching tape. "This guy filmed three of my swings and he was telling me about my spine angle and I was raising my head and I wasn't getting the full turn," said Lopez, a 13-handicapper. "Really, after he spoke, the only thing I really looked at when I looked at the tape was whether I looked fat or not."So I didn't really hear what he said.

Balance-Certified Golf to feature Hoch and White at PGA Show

HARVEST, Ala. -- Balance-Certified Golf, an acclaimed shaft tuning system which uses strategically-placed weights tailored to individual golfers needs, will feature Scott Hoch, winner of eleven PGA Tour events, and Re/Max World Long Drive professional Phil White in Booth 2313 at the PGA Merchandise Show & Convention Jan. 25-27 in Orlando, Fla. The issue is how the public will accept the whole premise. Golf already has its major championships, but they are not in the postseason; they are in the prime of the schedule. Does golf need another champion? What the PGA Tour is trying to do is give its late season a boost in exposure against competition from baseball's postseason, professional and college football, and the early stages of the NBA and NHL seasons. Once the PGA Championship takes place in mid-August, golf vanishes from newspapers, television and the public consciousness, except for the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup. Q. Will it work? A.

Though stars are missing, the race is on for golf's Cup

There is a professional golf tournament being played at The Plantation Course in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, that is true. FedExCup points are on the line under the new-look PGA Tour format and the players are guaranteed a hefty check, also true. And, yes, the record will credit Joe Durant for scoring the first birdie of the 2007 campaign. But if you hold a PGA Tour event without Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Sergio Garcia, etc., in the field, is it really a tournament? The first event of the golf season offers a prime example of why the Tour is trying to shake things up. When some of the biggest stars in golf aren't playing, the buzz, the ratings and the product suffer. Will the new FedExCup plan be the remedy? Let's look at the stories to follow in 2007: WINNERS AND LOSERS Things will change under the FedExCup format, and there promises to be losers as well as winners.

Woods follows own path into 2007 golf season

There's only one thing to say to anybody who complains that Tiger Woods isn't playing this week's PGA Tour season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship or who doesn't think golf's worth following unless Woods is in a tournament. Get over it. Woods will never play more than 20 tournaments a year on the PGA Tour. Jack Nicklaus didn't play much more. Nicklaus was in the game for the major tournaments, and so is Woods. Case closed. Woods said on his website last week that he's been "unable" to prepare for the Mercedes. But the carpenters and electricians who transformed what two days earlier had been a gutted studio into a nearly completed array of new sets were only part of the air of anticipation that occupied every corner of the network's Orlando headquarters at year's end. The PGA Tour is coming to the Golf Channel, along with the most sweeping changes in the network's 12-year history. The new slogan for the Golf Channel is "Every PGA Tour event begins here," but it is more than that. It is a new beginning for the network itself. The switch to a digital signal New Year's Day will provide a sharper picture. But his ability to play the two sports differed as widely as the sports themselves. At grid-iron football he was an acknowledged star and it was largely due to his feats in this sport that prompted Douglas Brinkley, the presidential historian, to describe him as "our great athlete-president". Gerald Ford played top-quality football at Michigan and after two years as a substitute on the university's Rose Bowl teams, he earned a starting place from where went on to be voted the team's most valuable player and to be invited to play in two national all-star games. The Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers liked him enough to both offer him pro football contracts, but he declined them and instead took up the position of boxing coach and assistant football coach at Yale where he went to earn his law degree.

Coons to golf at San Diego State

The 17-year-old Wilbraham resident missed the cut at the Junior Worlds golf championship at La Jolla, Calif., last summer, a perceived misfortune that ultimately led to her making a commitment to play college golf next fall at San Diego State University. Pakistan team, comprising Vaqas Ahmad and Tariq Mahmood, emerged victorious by beating champions from Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. For Pakistan, Tariq turned out to be the driving force in the second round, carding a score of 2 under par 70 and he certainly made things easier for his teammate Vaqas whose 75 looked rather modest as compared to Tariqs effort. The Pakistan teams aggregate score for two rounds was 292. Sri Lanka ended up runners-up in the team event. Not everybody gets in them. If you like playoff controversy, though, you'll love the next couple of weeks while college football czars work their computers overtime to figure out who's going to play Ohio State in the national championship game. (If they're smart, they'll go with America's Team -- the Dallas Cowboys.) Golf is just about the last sport to the playoff party. International founder Jack Vickers was ahead of his time with his Stableford tournament's original format that featured playoffs every day to see who advanced to the next round. The hyped FedEx Cup is on the way next year and the LPGA basked in a spoonful of buzz last week with its 32-player ADT Championship. The buzz stemmed from the biggest first prize in women's golf -- $1 million, same as the big number on TV's Deal or No Deal -- and the fact that the field shrank as the tournament progressed.Just 16 of the 32 players made it to the weekend cut, creating pressure and built-in dramaon Friday when there was a six-player shoot-out for the last three spots.

City Council approves deal to sell Rackham Golf Course

DETROIT Detroit City Council has approved a deal to sell the Rackham Golf Course in Huntington Woods to developers. The council yesterday approved the 11-point-two-five (M) million dollar offer from Premium Golf for the 123-acre course in suburban Detroit. The developer has said it wants to build housing. But Huntington Woods officials and residents want to keep the land as open space. A judge has ruled that the property must remain a public golf course or park unless deed restrictions on the property are waived. The property was deeded to Detroit as a public golf course in 19-24 by Horace and Mary Rackham. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Also, a plan to redevelop The Wizard golf course in Carolina Forest was rejected by the council after outcry from hundreds of residents. A trend toward redeveloping golf courses into more lucrative housing is sweeping Horry County, and the council is taking bolder measures to protect neighbors of targeted courses. But county legal fears could mean reconsideration of the Deer Track rezoning, which allows three homes per acre compared with seven per acre allowed under original zoning. Council Chairwoman Liz Gilland will spend the next two weeks negotiating with course owners in an attempt to avoid a lawsuit.

More GTi for less: Leon Cupra clubs the Golf

Seat's new Leon Cupra hot hatch will undercut the less powerful Golf GTi by up to £1,265 when it when it goes on sale in the UK from March next year. Several Quay County Commissioners attended Thursdays meeting and have attended past meetings in support of the project. The ISCs action serves a two-fold purpose of protecting water quality at Ute Reservoir while promoting economic development, the release said. Three-time Uganda Open champion Birungi shot one-under-par 71 on the final day to climb from sixth to third, two shots behind the winner.

Golf: Fasth reigns in Spain

Niclas Fasth ended Spain's dominance of the Mallorca Classic yesterday and completed a notable double of his own. "I need all the help I can get," Trump said. The 6-handicapper helped Watson as well in the friendly competition, earning skins with net birdies on three holes where he received strokes. "Donald played very well," Watson said. "He hit three 5-woods that he just smoked. He had it under control today." Watson made the two biggest shots of the day, driving the par-4 15th to set up a 6-foot eagle putt that pulled the team to 8-7 and taking the final three skins with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th. Competitors have the chance to win a car from GT Automotive with a hole-in-one. Island Companies are giving gold coins for the longest drive by male and female players plus another for closest to the pin. Cayman Airways and Spirit Airways have donated two trips for four which include accommodation in the Marriott at Doral and the Hyatt Regency at Coconut Point, Florida. When Recreation Director Skip Sheets took over management of the Scott County Golf Course recently, some of the facilities were in need of repair, but the greens were in good shape, and the view was spectacular. Mostly, the department buildings needed some cleaning and paint, Sheets said. The golf course pro shop is in a block building, one side of which had never been painted. On the other side, the paint was 40 years old and peeling. Weeds and vines had overrun the two tennis courts at the park. Those were cleared and are now usable.
